This young man enjoyed his first fishing experience. He and his family were staying at the nearby Bluestone resort and booked set of hired tackle from the Pembrokeshire coarse fishery.
With a little guidance from the fishery owner he soon landed his very first fish, a stunning roach. During his 3 hour session he caught a further half a dozen silvers, hooked a carp but failed to land it. Needless to say it's the one that got away that that was the topic of conversation with his family. I believe his experience here will turn him into be a life angling .
The second photo is of our very experienced angler Kevin the Heron. What is interesting about the picture is the fact he is actually lying down on the warm concrete. This is behavior I have never seen before. Normally they stand on one leg and appear to sleep . Or they brood high up on trees around the fishery, somewhere with a good vantage point.
While on the bird front I have seen some interesting visitors this week, a pair of golden finches , a pair of missel thrushes and a jay or two. These species are not that unusual but they do tend to come and go. You will spot them for a while and then they seem to disappear for a while.

It has been a busy few weeks with anglers enjoying the bright start to spring, even if there is still a chilly wind. All species of fish are being caught daily with some anglers more successful than others, is this just luck or are some a little more experienced than others? Possibly a mix of baits and the being willing to change tactics throughout the day is the secret.
I have been pleased to see a lot of carp simply cruising about in the sunshine and surprisingly some small ones coming up taking bits of the surface. I say surprisingly it is unusual or at least not a common sight to see 1 and 2 lb carp doing this. Usually, here anyway, they tend to hide deeper in the water bottom feeding until they reach 4 to 5lb .I managed to catch our friendly heron taking a small fish from the small pond in front of my window. I must apologise for the quality of the picture but it was taken through the window and the glass around the balcony.

It has been a mixed few weeks on the fishing front. Most anglers have been very successful and a few  others not so much, but thats fishing if it was easy it would take all the fun out of it. The last week or so has een the cold northly wind and night frosts be replaced by very pleasant spring like weather. As you would expect encouraged teh fish, the carp in particular move about and feed more readliy. We have also completed some maintance work around the banks which has also mad the fish move out into the open water , at least for a little while no doubt that when the vegetation regrows the carp will hide in the margins again.
Trish  had a wonderful day in the sunshine this week and sent me this message with a report of her days efforts.

"Had absolutely fantastic day, 17 carp 1 tench and approximately 30 roach/silvers hope to see you soon"

April is almost apon us so its an ideal time to dust of your tackle and plan your first fishing  trip of the year. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Lovely start to the day, cold but bright sunshine. The fish are bitting but a smaller hook and lighter tackle would be advised as in both lakes the water is crystal clear. The fisheries own feed pellets also help but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
I like this time of the year as with the warm sunshine on the water during the day it does not take long for the bigger carp to come up  to the surface and start basking.

Its been a quiet few weeks but at least it has given me a chance to clear and clean up after the winter. I know some of you will say it is still winter, maybe metrologically it is but in my head it is already spring. Daffodils are growing some already with buds on, some primroses and primilas in flower and buds and catkins on some trees. And further good news is  with the longer days and the sun, when out from under the cloud cover, does have some heat to it,   enough to warm the water and encouraging the fish to mooch about and feed more readily.
The anglers who have been steady in numbers as expected at this time of year, are catching  most days, some only silvers but others are catching carp  using lighter tackle and baits to attract them. All the fish are in excellent condition and do not appear to have lost any  condition over the colder darker days of winter where they tend to lie dormant in deeper water and certainly do not feed so much.

14.01.2025.
Happy New Year all, welcome to me first post of 2025 and an update on how the fishing went over the last month. Weather was a major factor as it has been very varied, from strong winds and storms to mild overcast days, heavy rain, frost, and mild sunny days or at least part sunny days.  This did not put all the anglers and those who did venture out where most if not all caught fish, some targeting the stunning roach and rudd  others just carp. The prize for top anglers of the period must got to two London lads who visited for the first time. This is the review they sent to me ,  "Had a lovely day on the 31 st of December and between me and my friend , fishing three rods between the two of us we landed a total of 36 carp between us ( ranging from 3-10 lb ) on relatively simple ledger rigs".  They were also very impressed with the quality of the carp and I am sure that on they next vist to Pembrokeshire we will see them again.  Another who did well was Tom a local angler who visited on a very frosty day. He had such a good day that he came back again a few days later, on both occasions he caught some stunning carp, again to double figures in weight.
On Christmas Eve we also had a visit from an Egret , it is the first and only time I have seen one at the fishery , infact I dont ever recall seeing in one in this area of South West Wales before. I do not think it managed to feed much , if at all,  as I have not seen it since. I did managed to get to photographs through a window hence the pictures are not as clear as I would have liked but at least I did get a record of it's visit.
